Bindi Wear International Launches Eco-Friendly Range
15 August 2008
Bindi Wear International is adding to Bindi Irwin’s stable of fashion collections with RENEW ‘restore the planet’. Created from second-generation cotton, this new summer range aims to inspire to reduce, reuse and recycle our resources towards a healthier planet.
Launching in Myer stores nationally and Australia Zoo this week, the fibre is made exclusively by US-based cotton maker Jimtex. All yarns are recycled from cut and sew textile clippings, which are then made into new fibres. It’s even better than organic cotton as it results in less pollution, chemicals and requires less energy and water as opposed to the heavy global footprint of conventionally-grown cotton.
Bindi says of the new range “I am always talking about re-using and replanting to renew the earth so this is a great way to get my message out. I am so excited about the range!”
The main slogans featured in the range - “Restore the planet” and “Reduce your ecological footprint” – are combined with Bindi Wear International’s own version of the well known recycle logo, replacing arrows with croc feet.
Alongside the Renew range, Bindi Wear International also has clothing and swimwear collections for children aged newborn to 10 years. Aiming to build young people’s awareness of the environment and conservation of wildlife, Bindi’s passion for animals and her great sense of adventure are apparent in each piece.
The full collection can be viewed at Australia Zoo’s online shop and are stocked at Myer, Australia Zoo and selected boutiques nationally. A portion of the proceeds will directly support Australia Zoo’s wildlife conservation programs.

Rare Black Beauty!
14 August 2008
Crikey! Guests on board Australia Zoo Whale Encounters vessel Steve’s Whale One were treated to a surprise visit by a black whale off the coast of Mooloolaba.
The all-black Humpback Whale was frolicking with other whales along the Sunshine Coast, and put on a great show for the lucky whale watchers.
Steve’s Whale One Skipper Allan ‘Shorty’ Short was excited by the rare sighting, having never seen a black whale in his 16 years of whale watching.
“We were treated to an awesome display from an all-black Humpback Whale, which is rare on the east coast of Australia,” said Shorty.
“These darker whales usually form the Northern Hemisphere migration and head up the west coast, but each year we do get the odd one that will take a right instead of a left and head up the east coast.”
Shorty identified this whale as being different to the black whale recently spotted off the Gold Coast, with comparisons between the two indicating that the whale spotted today was much darker and more active.
“It was very active, going off right beside the boat for about an hour,” said Shorty.
“It looks like it is fitting in well and having a great time.”
The special sighting comes just days after Australia Zoo Whale Encounters launched the first Sunrise Whale Encounter of the season.
On Sunday, Steve’s Whale One launched from the Wharf at Mooloolaba at 5.30am, taking excited guests off the Sunshine Coast for a unique whale watching experience, while taking in the sunrise over the ocean.
“The sunrise encounters are the best trips ever,” said Shorty.
“Even for me, who has been doing this for ages, to see the sun rise like this is just spectacular”.
“Guests get to experience all the fun and action of whale watching, but they also get to see some magnificent sunrises over the horizon with just the ocean in front of us,” said Shorty.
Sunrise Whale Encounters on board Steve’s Whale One are held on selected days throughout the rest of August and September, with a buffet breakfast provided on board for guests.
Regular whale watching tours are still held daily, leaving the Mooloolaba Wharf at 9.30am. Bookings are essential for all Australia Zoo Whale Encounters on board Steve’s Whale One.

A special day at the Zoo
1 August 2008
Australia Zoo provided a bit of fun last week for child survivors of crime when a group of young people affected by sexual and physical abuse spent the day at Australia Zoo.
A joint venture organised by the State Crime Operations Command’s Child and Sexual Assault Investigation Unit (CSAIU), the Boondall Child Protection Investigation Unit and the Queensland Blue Light Association, the day was organised to provide child survivors something to look forward to with a day out at Australia Zoo.
The children were treated to a hands-on experience with some of Australia Zoo’s cutest animals, before checking out the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior Show!
Now in its second year, Australia Zoo is happy to be able to support this initiative, and provide a big day out and special experience for these children. We hope that all the kids had a fantastic day!
