AUSTRALIA Zoo will make history on November 15 with a birthday celebration for the world’s oldest resident, Harriet, the Giant Galapagos Land Tortoise.

Born on the Galapagos Islands in 1830, Harriet was collected in 1835 by Sir Charles Darwin.

After a short time in England, she was brought to Australia by Darwin’s friend, Captain John Wickham.

For more than 100 years Harry, as she was known, called Brisbane’s City Botanic Gardens home, before she was transferred to the Gold Coast.

It was conservationist David Fleay who discovered that Harry was, in fact, a girl.

Harriet has been living with Steve and Terri Irwin at Australia Zoo since 1988.

November 15 will go ballistic, with free rides and face painting, loads of family fun and plenty of birthday cake. Be there when gates open at 8am to be part of history in the making.

Australia Zoo is on Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Drive at Beerwah. Phone 5436 2000.

Quest Community Newspapers has two major prize packs to give away.

Each pack, valued at $202, includes free entry to Australia Zoo for up to four people, a Harriet encounter for all and a photo package of two enlarged pictures.

Each Quest newspaper will also give away a first and second prize.

The first prize, valued at $300, includes a family pass (two adults, two children), four Australia Zoo caps, a Harriet plush toy, squeaky crocs, a backpack and a $20 photo voucher.

The second prize, valued at $152, includes a family pass, a Harriet plush toy and a tote bag.

To enter the draw, call 1900 966 616 before midnight on November 10. Competition calls cost 55c including GST. Mobile/pay phones extra.

Dialect collects callers’ details and provides them to Quest for the purpose of running this service.

Winners will be drawn on November 11 and notified by mail.

The results will also be published in the winners column the following week.

Entries will not be used for marketing purposes.
