Yandina Spirit House owners Helen and Peter Brierty are still floating on air after their win in the Australian Tourism Awards on Friday night.
The couple, who have turned an empty horse paddock into a highly-rated Thai-style restaurant and cooking school set in a rainforest, compare Friday night's win in the Tourism Restaurants and Catering Service section with winning an Olympic gold medal.
“It's just amazing, considering the competition we were against like the Hyatt in Perth and the Darling Casino restaurant,” Mrs Brierty said.
Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was also celebrating after being honoured as an Australian ambassador and having his Australia Zoo win the Best Tourism Retailing category.
“This award is not only for me personally, but it's for my whole team at Australia Zoo who work tirelessly to spread the message of conservation,” he said.
“Mate, there is no better place to live than Australia . I can never sell enough of Australia to the world.”
