Awards on the menu at tourism night
CROCODILE Hunter and Australia Zoo patriarch Steve Irwin was labeled an Australian icon after being presented with a special award for his contribution to tourism at the National Tourism Awards on the Gold Coast last night.
It was a night of double celebration for Irwin after his world-famous Beerwah zoo also won the National Tourism Retailing Award before an audience of more than 900 industry identities at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.
The Spirit House, the highly rated restaurant and cooking school based in Yandina, won the award for Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services.
The award came just a decade after Helen and Peter Brierty took an empty horse paddock, planted a small rainforest and built a Thai-style restaurant on a manmade lake.
But it was the Crocodile Hunter who was the night's big winner and won praise from Federal Tourism Minister Fran Bailey for his major role in putting Australia in the “international tourism spotlight”.
“Steve is one of our greatest tourism ambassadors,” she said.
